Percussion and hand drums phase: when close + OH/room cancel body or transient in mono

Conga, bongo, djembe, shaker, tambourine, or hand-percussion beds feel detailed with close mics under OH or room. Soloed, the stack is punchy. On mono fold for phone, stem delivery, broadcast, or LoRo, the body thins or the slap/transient bite collapses. That is usually polarity and arrival time between closes and OH/room, not a missing widener. Fix polarity and small delays first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo percussion beds.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a percussion compressor, not a transient designer, and not a substitute for close-vs-OH balance or mono audition. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.

What hand-percussion phase failure sounds like

Fast mono audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Solo the percussion bus (or hand-drums group). Flip the master (or a utility) to mono.
  2. A/B closes muted vs open under OH/room. Note what disappears: body, slap, shaker air, low-mid warmth.
  3. Solo pairs: conga close vs OH, djembe close vs room, bongo L vs R under room, shaker close vs OH.
  4. Check correlation on the percussion bus, then on the mix bus with percussion muted vs unmuted (correlation meters).

Order of operations (before spectral phase rotation)

1. Polarity between closes and OH/room

Flip hand-drum closes vs OH/room when body or slap returns immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase. Related drum habit: overhead & room, tom multi-mic.

2. Small delay align closes to the OH/room

Close mics arrive earlier than OH or room. A few samples of delay on closes (or nudge to the mains) often restores body better than any widener. Different job from spectral repair: vs time-align.

3. Prefer OH/room as the hero image

Closes should color and detail, not replace the mains. If every close sits at full level under loud OH, mono fold almost always hollows. Pull closes down first.

4. Simplify library multi-mic percussion stacks

Kontakt or similar close/room/OH at unity is a classic body killer for hand-drum patches. Mute unused mics, or prefer one hero pair. Guide: sample library multi-mic, sample stacks.

5. Skip wideners and Haas on percussion beds

Short-delay width and stereo imagers make headphones huge and phones hollow. Guides: vs imagers, Haas vs phase repair.

6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If a stereo percussion bed must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B, rotator bypassed vs engaged.

Percussion delivery checklist (to mix / stems)

1. Label closes vs OH vs room

Name tracks so the mixer knows which paths are close and which are mains. Ambiguous stacks get left open and comb on fold.

2. Mono-check percussion alone, then with kit / band

Solo hand drums in mono. Then open kit OH, bass, and other percussion in mono. Note fights between groups, not only inside hand drums. Related: toms, foley / SFX.

3. Watch stem and LoRo destinations

Percussion often lives as a stem. Guides: stem bus, LoRo, master bus mono.

4. Optional null / mono workflow in the DAW

Host-agnostic habit before you ship: DAW null-test + mono-check.

When NOT to use PHIXER here

Quick path: Solo percussion in mono → polarity closes vs OH/room → delay-align closes to mains → pull closes under hero OH/room → simplify library multi-mic → skip Haas/imagers → mono-check with kit/band → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation on a bed → deliver clear labels + stem → fold again for LoRo/broadcast/phone.
